What is local SEO?
When someone searches "physiotherapist in Sector 35" or "AC repair Zirakpur", Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any ordinary website results. That block is the local pack, and it takes a large share of the attention on local searches. Local SEO is the work of earning a place there, and in Google Maps itself.
Google has described local ranking as depending on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher or the location they typed) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You cannot change your address, but you can influence relevance and prominence a great deal. The factors are set out in Google Business Profile Help.
Who needs local SEO?
Any business where the customer either visits you or you visit them within a limited radius:
- Clinics, dentists, veterinary practices and diagnostic centres.
- Restaurants, cafés, bakeries and cloud kitchens.
- Home services such as plumbers, electricians, pest control and interior contractors.
- Showrooms, salons, gyms, coaching centres and hotels.
Local search behaviour in the Tricity has its own quirks. In Chandigarh, people often search by sector number rather than by area name. In Mohali, phases and newer localities along Airport Road matter. In Zirakpur, searches frequently mention VIP Road or Patiala Road. A good local strategy reflects the way your customers actually describe where they are. Our local SEO checklist for Chandigarh businesses covers these details step by step.
How local SEO works
Google Business Profile
This is the centre of local visibility. We make sure the primary category is the most specific accurate one, secondary categories are relevant, services and products are listed, opening hours (including holidays) are correct, photos are real and recent, and the business description explains what you do without stuffing keywords. Our Google Business Profile optimisation guide goes into each field.
Citations and consistency
Your name, address and phone number should match exactly across directories, social profiles, industry portals and your own website. Mismatched details, such as an old phone number on one directory or "SCO" written three different ways, create doubt about which information is correct.
Reviews
Review count, recency and rating all matter, and so do your replies. We set up a simple, compliant way to ask genuine customers for reviews after a completed visit or job. We never write reviews, buy them or offer incentives for positive ratings.
Location pages on your website
If you serve several areas, each one may deserve a page, but only if it contains genuinely local information: the services you offer there, directions, parking, local projects completed or area-specific FAQs. Swapping the city name on a template is not enough.
| Signal | What we check | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Category | Is the primary category the most specific accurate option? | Change from a generic category to the precise one |
| Consistency | Do address and phone match across the web? | Correct or claim outdated listings |
| Reviews | Are new reviews arriving steadily, and are they answered? | Post-visit review request by SMS or WhatsApp |
| Website | Does a page clearly support the profile's main services? | Create or improve a matching service page |
Tracking what the profile actually delivers
Google Business Profile shows calls, direction requests, website clicks and messages, but those numbers are easy to misread. We add UTM tags to the website link on the profile so that visits from Maps are recorded separately in GA4 instead of being lumped into organic search. For businesses that take bookings by phone, a simple question at the front desk ("How did you find us?") recorded in a sheet often fills gaps that no tool can.
Illustrative example: a veterinary clinic might notice that direction requests rise on weekends while calls peak on weekday mornings. That insight can shape staffing at the reception desk and the timing of profile posts, which is the kind of practical decision local data should support.
What does local SEO cost?
Local SEO is usually less expensive than broad national SEO, but the effort varies. The cost drivers are:
- The number of locations or branches, each needing its own profile and page.
- How messy existing listings are, including duplicates and suspended profiles.
- Competition in your category and area; a dentist in a busy sector faces more rivals than a specialist supplier.
- Whether you need new location pages written.
Common engagement models are a one-time clean-up and set-up project, a monthly local SEO plan covering posts, review management and reporting, and multi-location packages for chains or franchises.
How long does local SEO take?
Fixing a wrong category, filling missing profile fields or merging a duplicate listing can change visibility within weeks. Building review volume and prominence is gradual and depends on how many customers you serve. In competitive categories it can take several months before you hold a steady place in the pack for your main searches.
What to expect in the first 90 days
- First fortnight: profile audit, competitor comparison for your main searches, duplicate and citation check.
- By day 45: profile fully optimised, key citations corrected, review request process live with your front desk or field team.
- By day 90: location or service pages improved, regular profile posts running, and a report on calls, direction requests and website clicks from the profile.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding keywords to the business name. Padding a clinic's name with "Best Dentist Chandigarh" breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Using a virtual office address. Profiles need a real, staffed location or a service-area setting.
- Asking only happy customers for reviews. Selective requesting, often called review gating, is against Google's policies.
- Ignoring negative reviews. A calm, specific reply often reassures future customers more than the complaint worries them.
- Forgetting holiday hours. A customer who arrives to a locked shutter rarely comes back.
