What is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content the easiest, most trustworthy answer to a specific question. Traditional SEO focuses on ranking a page in a list of links. AEO focuses on the answer formats that appear above or within those links:
- Featured snippets: a highlighted extract from a page shown at or near the top of Google results, as a paragraph, list or table.
- People Also Ask: expandable related questions, each revealing a short answer from a web page.
- Voice answers: spoken responses from assistants on phones and smart speakers, often drawn from the same kinds of concise web answers.
- Knowledge-style panels and rich results that summarise facts about a business, product or topic.
AEO is a discipline within SEO rather than a replacement for it. A page usually needs to rank well already to be chosen for a snippet. It is also related to, but different from, generative engine optimization, which deals with AI-generated summaries that synthesise many sources.
Who needs AEO?
AEO is most valuable where customers research before they buy and ask questions in plain language:
- Healthcare and wellness providers: "How long does a root canal take?", "Is physiotherapy painful after knee surgery?"
- Education providers: eligibility criteria, admission timelines, course comparisons.
- Legal, financial and professional services: process and documentation questions.
- Manufacturers and B2B suppliers: specification, material and compatibility questions.
- Local service businesses answering "how much", "how long" and "do I need" questions before a call.
How it works
1. Question research
We gather the questions people actually ask, using Google Search Console query data, People Also Ask boxes for your core topics, autocomplete suggestions, your sales and support teams, call recordings where available, reviews and competitor FAQs. Questions are grouped by intent and mapped to the page that should answer each one, so you do not create several thin pages competing for the same query.
2. Answer-first writing
Each target question gets a direct answer immediately after its heading, typically in a couple of sentences, followed by detail, context and caveats. The pattern is simple: question as a heading, concise answer, then supporting explanation. Definitions start with "X is…", processes use numbered steps, and comparisons use a table, because those are the formats search engines tend to extract.
3. Page structure
Clear, descriptive H2 and H3 headings, short paragraphs, real HTML lists and tables rather than images of text, and one topic per section make it easier for Google to understand which part of a page answers which question.
4. Structured data, where it is eligible
Structured data helps search engines understand a page, and some types make pages eligible for rich results. It is important to be accurate about what it does and does not do:
| Claim you may hear | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| "Add AI schema to appear in AI answers." | There is no special schema type for AI answers or featured snippets. Structured data describes content; it does not force inclusion. |
| "FAQ schema gets you FAQ rich results." | Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of authoritative government and health sites. FAQPage markup is still valid, but most businesses should not expect the visual result. |
| "HowTo schema shows steps in search." | Google has deprecated HowTo rich results. |
| "Featured snippets need markup." | Featured snippets are selected algorithmically from page content. There is no markup to opt in, only controls to opt out or limit snippet length. |
We implement types that fit your content and that Google documents, such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article, BreadcrumbList and Review where genuinely applicable, and validate them with the Rich Results Test. The feature list in Google's structured data search gallery is our reference because eligibility changes over time.
5. Monitor and refine
We track which queries show snippets or PAA for your topics, whether your page is the source, and how impressions and clicks change in Search Console. Answers are refined where a competitor's extract is being preferred.
A note on clicks
Answer features can reduce clicks for simple factual questions because the searcher gets what they need on the results page. That is why we prioritise questions where a short answer leads naturally to a deeper need, such as cost drivers, suitability or next steps, and where appearing as the trusted source builds brand recognition even without an immediate click.
What does AEO cost?
Cost depends on:
- Number of topics and pages in scope.
- Existing content quality: restructuring good content is quicker than writing from scratch.
- Subject expertise required: medical, legal or technical answers need expert review.
- Technical work: structured data implementation depends on your CMS and templates.
AEO can be delivered as a one-off content and structure audit with rewrites for priority pages, or as part of an ongoing SEO or content writing retainer.
How long does it take?
Restructuring existing pages can happen within weeks, and Google may reprocess updated pages relatively soon after recrawling. Whether a page is chosen for a snippet is not in anyone's control and can change from week to week, so AEO is judged over months across a set of questions, not on a single query.
What to expect in the first 90 days
- Month one: question research, mapping questions to pages, audit of current answer formats and structured data.
- Month two: rewrite priority sections answer-first, add tables and lists where they suit, fix and validate structured data.
- Month three: monitor snippet and PAA presence, refine answers, and plan new content for unanswered questions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Burying the answer. Long introductions before the actual answer make extraction less likely.
- Adding FAQ blocks to every page. Generic, repeated FAQs add clutter and rarely help anyone.
- Marking up content that is not visible. Structured data must reflect what users can see on the page.
- Over-simplifying sensitive topics. Health and finance answers need accurate caveats and expert review.
- Chasing zero-value questions. Not every question deserves an answer on your site; focus on those connected to what you sell.
