What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engines are search experiences that write an answer rather than just listing links. They retrieve information from many sources, synthesise it, and usually cite some of those sources. Examples include Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT with search, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making your business and content a reliable, clearly understood source for those systems. The aim is twofold: that AI answers describe your business accurately when people ask about it, and that your pages are among the sources cited when people ask questions in your area of expertise.
How GEO differs from AEO
The two are often confused. Answer Engine Optimization targets specific answer features in classic search, such as featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice answers, where a single extract from a single page is shown. GEO deals with synthesised answers built from many sources, often across a conversation with follow-up questions.
| AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Target surfaces | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice answers | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot |
| Unit of success | Your page's passage is the extracted answer | Your brand is described accurately and your pages are cited among several sources |
| Main levers | Answer-first formatting, question research, page structure | Entity clarity, original information, third-party corroboration, consistency, crawler access |
| Measurement | Search Console queries and SERP feature tracking | Prompt testing, AI referral traffic, brand mention monitoring |
Who needs GEO?
- Businesses whose customers research in depth before buying, such as B2B buyers, patients choosing a specialist or parents comparing schools.
- Brands that AI tools describe incorrectly, with outdated services, wrong locations or confusion with a similarly named company.
- Experts with genuine original knowledge, such as manufacturers, consultants and specialists, whose insight is not yet published in a citable form.
- Companies already doing SEO who want to understand how AI answers are changing their visibility.
How it works
1. AI visibility audit
We run a structured set of prompts across AI tools: questions about your brand, comparisons with competitors, and category questions your customers ask. We record whether you are mentioned, how you are described, which sources are cited, and what is inaccurate. Because answers vary between sessions, users and over time, we treat this as a sample, not a ranking.
2. Entity clarity
AI systems need to be confident about who you are. We make sure your business name, what you do, who you serve, where you operate, key people and contact details are stated clearly and consistently on your website, supported by Organization or LocalBusiness structured data, your Google Business Profile, social profiles and reputable directories. Contradictions, such as different phone numbers or old service lists, create uncertainty.
3. Original, citable information
Generative answers favour sources that add something: first-hand experience, original data, specific processes, clear definitions, expert commentary and honest comparisons. Illustrative example: a Mohali precision engineering firm explaining tolerances achievable with different machining processes, based on its own shop-floor experience, is far more citable than a generic "benefits of CNC machining" article. We help subject experts turn knowledge into structured, well-sourced pages, with author information that shows who wrote them.
4. Corroboration beyond your site
AI tools draw on the wider web. Accurate listings, genuine reviews, industry association pages, press coverage and expert contributions help confirm what your own site says. This is earned, not bought, and it overlaps with online reputation management.
5. Technical access
Pages must be crawlable, indexable and fast, with important content in HTML rather than hidden behind scripts or images. For Google, pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as supporting links in AI features; Google's guidance on AI features and your website says no special files or markup are required beyond normal SEO best practice. For other tools we review robots.txt so relevant search crawlers, such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search or PerplexityBot, are not accidentally blocked, while you decide separately whether to allow model-training crawlers.
6. Monitoring
We repeat the prompt set regularly, track referral traffic from AI platforms in GA4, and watch branded search trends. Google Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic within overall web search data rather than as a separate report, so interpretation needs care.
What does GEO cost?
- Size of the prompt set and number of AI platforms monitored.
- Entity clean-up needed across your site, listings and profiles.
- Content development, particularly time with your subject experts.
- Existing SEO health: technical problems must be fixed first.
We offer a one-off AI visibility audit with a prioritised action plan, or ongoing GEO combined with SEO and content work.
How long does it take?
Entity and technical fixes can be made within weeks. How quickly AI answers reflect them varies by platform, depending on crawling, indexing and how each system retrieves information. Content-led and corroboration work compounds over months. Anyone promising fixed timelines for AI citations is guessing.
What to expect in the first 90 days
- Month one: AI visibility audit, entity inconsistency list, crawler access review and baseline measurements.
- Month two: fix entity information and structured data, correct listings, and brief the first original content pieces with your experts.
- Month three: publish content, begin corroboration outreach, re-run prompts and compare against the baseline.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Believing in secret AI markup. There is no special schema or file that makes AI tools cite you.
- Mass-producing AI-written pages. Unoriginal content gives generative engines no reason to cite you and risks breaching search spam policies.
- Blocking all AI crawlers by default without understanding which ones power search features you want to appear in.
- Treating one prompt result as a ranking. AI answers vary; look at patterns across many prompts.
- Neglecting classic SEO. Retrieval for AI answers still depends heavily on search indexes.
