What is mobile app development?

Mobile app development covers everything needed to put a working application on your users' phones: product planning, UI/UX design for touch screens, front-end app code, a back end and API for data, testing on real devices, submission to Google Play and the Apple App Store, and maintenance afterwards.

Most business apps are really two products. The part people see is the app. The part they do not see is the server that stores accounts, orders, bookings or records and sends push notifications. Both need to be designed and secured properly.

Who needs a mobile app?

An app is a bigger commitment than a website. It is worth building when people will use it repeatedly and it can do something a mobile website cannot do as well. Good candidates include:

  • Field sales and service teams capturing orders, visits, photos and signatures, sometimes with patchy connectivity.
  • Distributor and dealer ordering for manufacturers and pharma companies, with reorder history and scheme visibility.
  • Customer loyalty and repeat ordering, for example food, groceries, salons or pharmacies.
  • Bookings and memberships for gyms, clinics, coaching institutes and sports facilities.
  • Apps using device features such as camera, GPS, barcode scanning, Bluetooth hardware or offline storage.

If customers will visit once or twice a year, a fast, mobile-friendly website is usually the better investment. Our web development team can build a progressive web app that behaves app-like without store downloads.

Native, cross-platform or hybrid?

ApproachTechnologyStrengthsTrade-offs
Native AndroidKotlin, Jetpack ComposeFull platform access, strong performanceSeparate codebase from iOS
Native iOSSwift, SwiftUIDeep Apple integration, platform-consistent feelSeparate codebase from Android
Cross-platformFlutter (Dart)One codebase, consistent UI, good performanceSome platform features need native code or plugins
Cross-platformReact Native (JavaScript/TypeScript)One codebase, uses native UI components, suits teams with web skillsDependency upgrades need care
Hybrid or PWAWeb technologies in a wrapper or browserLowest effort, reuses web codeLimited device access and store experience

For most business apps we recommend Flutter or React Native, which cut duplicated work while delivering a genuinely native-feeling experience. We recommend fully native development where heavy use of platform features, complex animations or maximum performance matters, such as apps interacting closely with hardware.

How it works

Product definition

We define users, core tasks and a lean first version. A field sales app, for example, might start with login, customer list, order capture and sync; route planning and analytics can follow once the basics prove useful.

Design for thumbs

Mobile screens demand ruthless prioritisation. We design flows around one-handed use, readable sizes and clear states for loading, errors and offline use, following Android and iOS conventions. Detailed design is often done alongside our UI/UX design team.

Back end and API

The back end is often a Laravel application exposing a secure, versioned API, with token-based authentication, role permissions and admin panels for your staff. Push notifications typically use Firebase Cloud Messaging, which also delivers to iOS through Apple's push service.

Testing

We test on a range of real devices, including budget Android phones common in India, across OS versions and network conditions. Crash reporting is built in before launch so problems are visible from day one.

Store publishing

We prepare store listings, screenshots, privacy policy links and the data safety and privacy disclosures both stores require, and handle review feedback. Store policies change, so we check current requirements in the Android Developers documentation and Apple's developer guidelines at submission time.

App maintenance

An app is never truly finished. Every year Google and Apple release new OS versions, and stores periodically require apps to target newer platform versions to remain available for updates. Libraries receive security fixes, and devices change screen shapes. Maintenance covers compatibility updates, dependency upgrades, crash fixes, API monitoring and small improvements. Budget for it from day one.

What does mobile app development cost?

  • Platforms and approach: one cross-platform codebase versus two native apps.
  • Feature scope: number of screens, user roles, payments, chat, maps, offline sync.
  • Back end: using an existing system's API or building a new server and admin panel.
  • Integrations with ERP, CRM, payment gateways or hardware.
  • Design complexity and animation.
  • Ongoing costs: developer account fees, hosting, notification and SMS services, and maintenance.

We work on a fixed-scope MVP, a phased sprint model for evolving products, or a maintenance retainer for existing apps, including apps built by other teams after a code review.

How long does it take?

A focused MVP with a few core flows and a simple back end can reach the stores within a few months. Larger apps with multiple roles, payments and integrations take longer and are best released in stages. Store review adds a short, variable wait at each release.

What to expect in the first 90 days

  1. Weeks 1–3: discovery, user stories, platform recommendation, and clickable prototype of core flows.
  2. Weeks 4–9: app and API development in sprints, with test builds distributed to your team through internal testing tracks.
  3. Weeks 9–12: device testing, bug fixing, store listings and submission.
  4. Week 13: release, crash monitoring and a backlog for the next version based on early feedback.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Building an app nobody needs to open twice. Validate repeat use before investing.
  • Cramming every feature into version one. It delays launch and hides what users actually value.
  • Testing only on flagship phones. Many real users have older or budget devices with less memory.
  • No offline handling. Field apps must cope with weak signal without losing data.
  • Developer accounts in the agency's name. Your Google Play and Apple developer accounts should belong to your business.
  • No maintenance budget. Unmaintained apps eventually break or disappear from store search.

Apps for internal operations often connect to wider systems; see our IT solutions for CRM, ERP and integration work.

Mobile App Development FAQs

Should we build for Android or iOS first?

It depends on your users. Android has a very large share of smartphone users in India, so consumer and field-team apps often prioritise it. If your customers are mostly premium buyers or international, iOS may matter equally. With Flutter or React Native, launching on both platforms together is usually practical and avoids the question altogether.

Is Flutter or React Native better?

Both are mature and capable. Flutter renders its own UI and gives very consistent visuals across platforms. React Native uses native components and suits teams with JavaScript or TypeScript skills, sharing knowledge with web projects. We recommend based on your app's needs, existing team skills and the libraries you depend on, rather than a fixed preference.

Can you take over an app built by another company?

Usually yes. We start by reviewing the source code, build setup, dependencies, back end and store account access. We then report on its health, the risks, and what it would take to maintain or improve it. Access to the full source code and the developer accounts is essential before any takeover.

What happens if Apple or Google rejects the app?

Rejections are common and usually fixable. Reviewers explain which guideline the app failed, often around privacy disclosures, login requirements, incomplete features or metadata. We address the issue, reply through the review console where appropriate and resubmit. Following store guidelines from the design stage reduces the chance of rejection.

Why does an app need ongoing maintenance?

Operating systems update every year, stores raise their technical requirements, third-party libraries release security patches, and APIs you depend on change. Without maintenance, apps gradually develop bugs, crashes or policy issues and may stop being available to new users. A maintenance plan keeps the app compatible, secure and stable.
