What is Instagram marketing?
Instagram is where many people discover restaurants, salons, boutiques, interior designers, cafés and even doctors before they ever search on Google. Instagram marketing is the work of making your account the one they stop on, follow and eventually message.
It is a different discipline from Facebook marketing, even though both are owned by Meta and share an ad system. Instagram rewards visual storytelling, short-form video and a consistent aesthetic. Users behave differently too: they save posts to come back to, share Reels with friends in DMs, and increasingly use search within Instagram to find places and products. The paid mechanics are covered on our Facebook and Meta Ads page; this page focuses on what makes Instagram itself work.
Who should invest in Instagram?
- Food and hospitality: cafés, bakeries, cloud kitchens, hotels and banquet venues where appearance and atmosphere drive the decision.
- Beauty, fashion and wellness: salons, clinics offering aesthetic treatments, boutiques and fitness studios.
- Home and design: interior designers, furniture makers, architects and real estate developers showing finished spaces.
- D2C brands: skincare, ayurvedic and herbal products, accessories and gifting, where Instagram often acts as the storefront.
- Education and coaching: institutes whose students are young and spend significant time on the platform.
It is less suited to businesses whose buyers are procurement teams or engineers; LinkedIn and search usually serve them better.
How we run Instagram marketing
Start with the profile
Your profile is a landing page. Within a few seconds a visitor should know what you do, where you are and how to contact you. We optimise the name field (which is searchable), bio, category, contact buttons, link, location and Story Highlights. Highlights work well as a mini website: menu, prices, reviews, location, FAQs.
Plan formats for different jobs
| Format | Main job | Example idea |
|---|---|---|
| Reels | Reaching new people | A salon's thirty-second before-and-after with the stylist explaining the technique |
| Carousels | Teaching and earning saves | An interior designer's "five storage ideas for small kitchens" |
| Stories | Keeping followers close | A bakery's daily "fresh out of the oven" update with a poll |
| Broadcast channels and DMs | Converting interest | Early access to a boutique's new collection for followers who opt in |
Make content people want to keep
Instagram's systems pay close attention to whether people watch to the end, save, share and send posts to friends. That rewards content with genuine utility or emotional pull rather than generic promotional graphics. We build a mix of educational, entertaining and proof-based posts, with direct selling kept to a minority.
Illustrative example: an ayurvedic skincare brand might alternate ingredient explainer carousels, short Reels showing texture and application, customer unboxing videos shared with permission, and occasional launch announcements. The educational posts build the trust that makes the launch posts convert.
Handle DMs like a sales channel
Many Instagram enquiries arrive as a message saying "price?" or "available?". We set up quick replies, saved answers and, where suitable, automated first responses that collect key details before a human takes over. Response time is tracked, because enquiries left for a day often go cold.
Use ads to extend the best posts
Organic reach tells us which messages resonate. We then run Instagram placements in Meta Ads Manager: Reels ads to reach new local audiences, Stories ads with a clear swipe action, and remarketing to people who engaged with your profile but have not bought. Partnership ads let a creator's post run through your ad account with their permission.
Collaborate with the right creators
We shortlist creators by audience relevance and comment quality, not follower count, and use Instagram's paid partnership label for every sponsored post.
Measure beyond likes
Likes are the least informative number Instagram offers. We look at the share of Reel viewers who are not yet followers, average watch time, saves per post, shares via DM, profile visits and link taps. For businesses that take bookings, we also add a tracked link in the bio and ask new customers how they found you, so Instagram's contribution to real sales is visible rather than assumed.
What does Instagram marketing cost?
Costs are mainly shaped by content production. The drivers are:
- How many Reels, carousels and Stories each month.
- Whether shoots happen on location, and how often.
- Editing complexity, including subtitles, motion graphics and voice-overs.
- DM management hours and response-time commitments.
- Ad budget and creator fees, which are paid separately.
We offer content-and-management retainers, ads-only management for brands that create in-house, and a one-off profile and content strategy workshop with templates your team can use.
How long before Instagram shows results?
A single Reel can reach many people quickly, but reliable growth usually takes a few months of consistent posting while you learn what your audience responds to. Ads shorten the timeline for enquiries. Treat the first quarter as a learning period and judge the account by the direction of saves, shares, profile visits and messages.
What to expect in the first 90 days
- Month one: profile rebuilt, competitor and audience review, content pillars agreed, first shoot planned and completed.
- Month two: regular Reels and carousels published, Highlights organised, DM process live, first ads promoting top organic posts.
- Month three: analysis of which hooks, formats and topics perform, creator collaboration tested, and the coming months' hooks and themes locked in.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Posting Reels without a hook. If the first second does not earn attention, the rest is never watched.
- Using the same design template for every post. A feed of identical offer graphics looks like an advertising board, not a brand.
- Relying on hashtags. They play a smaller role than they once did; captions and on-screen text that describe the content matter more for discovery.
- Replying "DM for price" in comments. Many people will not bother. Answer where you can, or send details promptly.
- Buying engagement pods or followers. They distort your data and reduce reach to genuine followers.
