Local SEO is less about clever tricks and more about doing a long list of small things properly and then keeping them up to date. Most businesses we audit have done some of these tasks, but rarely all of them, and rarely in a sensible order.

This checklist is organised in the order we would work through it for a business serving customers in Chandigarh. Tick off each section before moving to the next. For a deep dive on the profile itself, we have a separate Google Business Profile optimisation guide; here we cover the full picture.

Phase 1: Measurement and ownership

You cannot improve what you cannot see. Set these up before changing anything else, so you have a baseline.

TaskDone?
Google Search Console verified for the whole domain (domain property)☐
GA4 installed, with key events for form submissions, phone clicks and WhatsApp clicks☐
UTM tag added to the website link on your Google Business Profile, so profile visits are identifiable in GA4☐
Owner access to domain registrar, hosting, Google Business Profile and analytics held by the business☐
A simple spreadsheet or CRM recording where each enquiry came from☐
A note of current map pack visibility for five to ten core searches, checked from a few different sectors☐

Checking visibility from different locations matters in Chandigarh because map results change noticeably between, say, the northern sectors and the southern sectors. A business near Sector 22 may appear for searches made nearby but not for someone in Sector 45.

Phase 2: Google Business Profile essentials

  • Business name exactly as on your signage, with no added keywords.
  • Most specific accurate primary category, plus relevant secondary categories.
  • Address formatted the same way everywhere, including SCO or booth number, sector and any sub-sector letter.
  • Map pin placed on the correct building and entrance.
  • Regular hours and holiday hours kept accurate.
  • Services or products listed with short, plain descriptions.
  • Genuine photos of the exterior, interior, team and work.
  • Website link pointing to the most relevant page, which is sometimes a location page rather than the homepage.

Service pages

Create one page per main service. A single "Services" page listing everything gives Google and customers little to work with. Each service page should explain what the service involves, who it suits, what the process looks like, and how to get in touch. Mention your area naturally where it is relevant, not in every sentence.

Location information

  • Full name, address and phone number in the footer and on the contact page, matching the profile.
  • An embedded map on the contact page.
  • Directions that reflect how people actually navigate here: nearby landmarks, which road to enter from, parking notes.
  • LocalBusiness structured data with your correct details, using the most specific type available.

Location pages, carefully

If you genuinely serve customers in Mohali, Panchkula or Zirakpur as well, a separate page for each area can help, but only if each page has something unique to say: different service mix, travel arrangements, local projects or area-specific information. Creating copies of the same page with the city name swapped is thin content and rarely works.

Technical basics

  • Pages load quickly on mobile data, not just office Wi-Fi.
  • Phone numbers are tap-to-call links.
  • Each important page has a unique title and meta description.
  • No important pages blocked from indexing. Our technical SEO checklist covers this in more depth.

Phase 4: Citations and local listings

Citations are mentions of your business details on other websites. They help confirm your details to search engines and send some direct traffic.

  • Search for your business name and phone number to find existing listings, including old ones with outdated details.
  • Correct or claim listings on the major Indian business directories and maps platforms you already appear on.
  • Add listings on industry-specific platforms that your customers actually use, such as healthcare, property, education or restaurant platforms.
  • Include your business on chamber of commerce or trade association sites if you are a member.
  • Avoid paying for bulk submissions to hundreds of low-quality directories.

Phase 5: Reviews and reputation

  • Create a short review link from your profile and share it with every customer after service.
  • Make it part of the process: at billing, in the delivery message, in the follow-up email.
  • Reply to every review within a few days, thanking positive reviewers and responding calmly to complaints.
  • Never offer discounts or gifts for reviews, and never ask staff or relatives to post them.
  • Track common themes in reviews and fix the operational issues they reveal.

Phase 6: Local content that earns attention

Content does not need to be long blog posts. It needs to be useful to local customers and specific enough that it could not be about any other city.

  • Answer questions customers ask at the counter or on the phone, as short FAQ entries or articles.
  • Explain services in the context of local conditions: for example, how Chandigarh's summers and dust affect AC servicing schedules, or what paperwork a property buyer in the Tricity should expect.
  • Share genuine project stories or examples, with customer permission.
  • Cover local events or partnerships you are genuinely involved in.

Local links are not about volume. A handful of genuine mentions from relevant local organisations can matter more than hundreds of generic directory links.

  • List the organisations you already have real relationships with: suppliers, trade associations, resident welfare associations, schools, colleges or sports clubs you sponsor.
  • Ask whether they have a members, partners or sponsors page where your business could be listed with a link.
  • Offer genuine expertise to local publications or community pages, such as tips related to your trade, rather than paying for placements.
  • Take part in local events or markets and make sure event pages mention your business correctly.
  • Avoid link exchanges and paid link packages, which carry risk and rarely help local visibility.

Phase 8: Monthly maintenance

Monthly taskWhy
Add a few new photos and one or two profile postsShows an active business and helps conversions
Reply to all new reviews and questionsBuilds trust and catches problems early
Check profile for edits suggested by Google or the publicUnwanted changes to hours, category or phone are common
Review Search Console for new queries and indexing issuesFinds content opportunities and technical problems
Compare enquiries by source with the previous monthKeeps attention on business results, not vanity metrics
Recheck visibility for core searches from a few locationsShows whether changes are having an effect

Illustrative example: prioritising the checklist

Illustrative example. An interior design studio serving Chandigarh has a website with one services page, a profile with the generic category "Designer", few reviews and no call tracking. The sensible order is: set up tracking so enquiries can be counted, correct the primary category to the most accurate interior design option, build separate pages for residential and commercial interiors with real project photos, begin asking recent clients for reviews, and then fix old directory listings showing a previous phone number. Content comes after these basics.

Key takeaways

  • Set up tracking and confirm account ownership before making changes.
  • Get the Google Business Profile right: name, category, address format, pin and photos.
  • Give each main service its own genuinely useful page, and avoid city-swapped duplicate pages.
  • Clean up citations rather than buying bulk directory submissions.
  • Make review requests part of normal operations and reply to every review.
  • Maintain everything monthly; local SEO decays if left alone.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take to show results in Chandigarh?

Fixing profile errors such as a wrong category or incorrect address can show changes within weeks. Building reviews, content and citations is gradual and usually takes a few months to show a steady effect. The timeline depends on how competitive your category is and how much groundwork already exists.

Do I need separate pages for Mohali and Panchkula if I serve them?

Only if you have genuinely different information for each area, such as services offered there, how you operate, or relevant local projects. Pages that simply repeat the same text with the city name changed are unlikely to help and can weaken the site overall. Start with strong service pages first.

Is the sector number important in my business address?

Yes. In Chandigarh, people navigate and search by sector, so the sector number should appear in your address consistently on your profile, website and listings. Use the same format each time, including any sub-sector letter, so the details match across the web.

Should I pay for directory listings?

Paid listings can make sense on platforms your customers actually use to find businesses like yours, judged on the enquiries they produce. Paying for bulk submissions to large numbers of generic directories rarely helps and can create inconsistent details that are hard to clean up later.
